Land Use
Cutting down on land use
In the coalition agreement in November 2005, the Merkel government stated that the National Sustainability Strategy would be implemented and further developed. However, the current land consumption of approximately 120 hectares per day is still a long way from the its goal of 30 hectares per day by the year 2020. Consequently, urgent political action must be taken to cut down on land use. The most promising measures include modifying the economic incentives for municipalities. At present municipalities are incentivised to designate as much land as possible for building and real estate owners have no incentive to use their land carefully.
